#16: Ebisu East Park
Squid Toilet
THE TOKYO TOILET
Location #16 is at 1-2-16 Ebisu, Shibuya,
in the Ebisu East Park.
The designer, Fumihiko Maki, wrote that
the clear sight lines,
ventilation,
and natural light
all contribute to the feeling of safety and cleanliness.
Ebisu East Park is known as "Octopus Park" because of its
octopus-themed playground equipment.
So, this facility has been dubbed the "Squid Toilet".
Visiting the Toilet
The toilet is at the southwest corner of the park. One thing that I learned from this project of visiting all seventeen Tokyo Toilet project sites is that Tokyo is filled with small parks. It's an enormous city, and even on a Shinkansen that quickly accelerates to high speed, leaving the city means traversing a huge densely settled area. Small neighborhood parks really improve the quality of life for residents.
The roof includes compound curves, somewhat like those at location #09, but unique to this location.
The floor plan shows how open the design is. It's really three structures with entrances both to outside and to a small central court.
Moving on to the Next Location
Four Tokyo Toilet project facilities are within short walking distance from Ebisu Station — #13, #14, #15, and #16. The JR Yamanote Line, Saikyō Line, and Shōnan-Shinjuku Line serve Ebisu Station, as does the Hibiya Line of the subway.
